LEVEL 3: ADVANCED ART INSTRUCTION

"Scratch Art" DOG Using Oil Pastels

LEVEL 3: ADVANCED ART INSTRUCTION

Get REALLY Detailed Using This Scratch Art Method

ART SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  1. Paper (Cardstock Preferred)
  2. Oil pastels
  3. Pencil
  4. A toothpick

ABOUT THIS PROJECT:

Scratch art is usually taught to younger children, but I learned it as an advanced artist. I use it mostly to draw animals with fur. It would also be useful for anything with texture. Not so much for smooth, glossy surfaces. In this lesson, we are going to draw and add details to a curious dog.

This project is part of the Renaissance Art Curriculum.

IN THIS PROJECT, YOU WILL LEARN:

  • How to make a silhouette of a dog on a white background.
  • How to use scratch art
  • More about contour lines
  • More about light and contrast.

YOUR CHALLENGE

Grab your oil pastels, find a picture of your pet or your favorite animal. Draw the contour of the animal and fill in the rest with the oil pastels and use a toothpick to add the details.

Then take a picture and get your parents permission to share your creation with the world.
